Chaffee Zoological Gardens
Fresno, CA - 1988
The project is a rain forest complete with plants, birds, animals and the humidity required to make them thrive; all in the middle of the San Joaquin Valley desert at Fresno's Chaffee Zoo. The design combines elements of authenticity and fantasy with assistance of modern engineering and technology to create the ambiance of a South American rain forest. Barriers are carefully designed and detailed to suggest indigenous structures. The form of the enclosure is intentionally irregular; balance and symmetry in the design are avoided. The form of the building is somewhat abstract yet simple so as not to draw attention to the building and dominate the birds and plants within them. |
